It is still registered under my name, have a clear title and the California green sticker. I stored it a dry garage and just serviced all fluids. The bike run drive and stops like the day I bought it. It is in awesome condition with some scratches. I bought this 250R in 1985 and used it very little and took good care of it. This ATC 250R is priced by the seller at just over 50% of the 250 SX on eBay and feels like fair market pricing to us.Here is my original 1985 Honda 250R ATC 3 wheeler in original condition with low hours. At the time of writing, it is under timed auction and at an $8,500 high bid. A quick review of eBay does not show any ATC 250R listings, but there is a trio of 350x models, a 1972 ATC 90, and a “Big Red.” The closest comparable offering is a somewhat less-radical 1986 Honda 250 SX with larger tires than the 250R in Red/White/Blue livery. Our subject ATC 250R is just the thing to cure the late-autumn blahs, being all about outdoor fun and little else. It looks great and ready to attack the trail, although confirmation of running condition and service history is a must with any vehicular purchase. According to the seller, the ATC shows just 1,111 indicated miles and is not titled we assume it will be sold on Bill of Sale, but it’s essential to confirm first. Throttle response and performance are mighty with a zingy 2-stroke 250cc engine and 6-speed gearbox. This very rare offering is a high-performance 1985 Honda ATC 250R, essentially a 3-wheeled motocross racing bike. Above all, they were plenty of fun to ride! Every other kid in my posse was awestruck and just had to have a turn with mine. They’re easily maintained, serviceable at any Honda powersports dealer, and able to absorb undue punishment with an amazingly forgiving character. Snowfall didn’t stop the fun, it only added a new dimension to the ATC’s go-anywhere, anytime nature. Awesome wheelies were produced on command with lots of throttle and a little weight-shifting to the rear of the one-piece saddle/rear fender assembly. Yes, you could cause mayhem in certain situations, including barrel rolls on overly steep uphill runs and lateral rolls near maximum speeds. Was the ATC a real “3-wheeled death machine?” Not according to this Zero260 contributor, who was the only kid in a wide radius who owned, rode, and desperately loved a fully equipped new 1975 Trail 70 2-wheeler, soon replaced by an early 1978 ATC 110 and 250 Odyssey during the late 1970s/early 1980s.

They are all extremely fun to ride and likely ignited the powersports market as sales increased through the 1980s, more frequent accidents, injuries, and lawsuits, plus the advent of Suzuki’s 4-wheeled 125cc “Quad” ATV in 1983, all conspired to kill Honda’s innovative ATC by the end of the 1908s. While all are certainly fun and capable of handling virtually any terrain, including the ability to float in certain situations, the ATC is also capable of (very) limited towing duties with the installation of a rear hitch. Honda even produced a very fun and fast line of 4-wheeled, dune buggy-style vehicles known as the “Odyssey,” initially with 2-stroke, 250cc power and 6-point roll cages. Developments would include the more-powerful ATC 110 by 1978, followed by the ATC 70, ATC 185, ATC 250R, 200cc “Big Red” utility variant, and wicked 350cc ATC 350x. Credit rightly goes to Honda engineer Osamu Takeuchi, who designed the ATC with a view to giving Honda dealers a product to sell during winter months. A radical all-weather, 3-wheeled hybrid bike, the ATC featured a 90cc OHV single-cylinder engine borrowed from the Trail 90, plus a 4-speed transmission, automatic clutch, chain drive, and no suspension – huge flotation-type tires were an elegantly simple solution providing both traction and dampening. introduced the ATC 90 to America in 1970.

Going from strength to strength during the 1960s with an ever-expanding motorcycle line that beat the established British marques with far better reliability and trumped American manufacturers with excellent value for the money, Japan’s Honda Motor Co.
